The debate on the no-confidence motion in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly on Monday witnessed an acrimonious verbal duel between Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy and Leader of Opposition N Chandrababu Naidu who said the government has become a “big joke” in the public.

Naidu initiated the debate on the no-trust motion, moved by his Telugu Desam Party (TDP), and started listing out the “failures” of the Congress government on all fronts.

“Our no-confidence is not only against the Chief Minister but also on the ministers. This government has lost our confidence to rule,” Naidu remarked, prompting Kumar to retort

Kumar said, “We don’t need Chandrababu’s confidence. We have people’s confidence and hence are in power”.

As the Leader of Opposition named the Chief Minister and made certain remarks about his administration, Reddy rose and said in an angry voice, “Let us settle the scores now,” provoking an equal reaction from the former.

“You are a nominated Chief Minister. You got the post by falling on Sonia’s feet. You are a sealed cover CM and yours is a spineless leadership,” Naidu charged.

“My family (Kiran and his late father Amarnath Reddy) won 12 elections on behalf of the Congress since 1962. I have the support of MLAs and the grace of Sonia Gandhi. You backstabbed your own father-in-law to become the Chief Minister (in 1995),” the Chief Minister retorted.

“I am a leader on my own. You are a leader at Sonia’s mercy,” Naidu hit back.

“As Chief Minister you are unable even to go to the public without police protection. Your government has become a big joke in the public,” the Leader of Opposition continued.

“You are facing CBI probe (into alleged amassing of wealth). You have no right to talk about corruption,” Reddy reacted when the TDP president referred to the various alleged scandals under the Congress rule since 2004.

Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday slammed the state government for its failure to take steps for the welfare of farmers despite crops in lakhs of acres withering due to drought.

Talking to media persons at NTR Trust Bhavan, Naidu said that crops in 700 mandals in 16 districts were affected due to severe drought. Stating that crops spread over 37 lakh acres was damaged due to drought, he demanded that the state government declare 700 mandals as drought hit and take steps to help the affected farmers.

Expressing serious concern over the pathetic condition of farmers, Naidu alleged that both the Centre and State governments have been ignoring the plight of farmers. He also criticized the governments for increasing prices of fertilizers and seeds which have worsened their financial situation. He said the rising agriculture costs have forced many farmers to give up their profession.

The TDP chief demanded that the government implement the recommendations of the Swaminathan Committee report after discussing the same in the Parliament. He said that the restrictions imposed on export of rice and cotton has forced the farmers to sell their produce at low price.

To protest against government’s indifferent attitude towards farmers, Naidu said that he would launch ‘Rythu Poru Yatra’ from November 2 in drought affected mandals. The proposed Yatra will begin on November 2 from Anantapur followed by Kadapa on Nov 3 and Kurnool on Nov 4.

Later, while addressing the party workers on the occasion of appointment of Putta Sudhakar Yadav of Kothapalli village in Brahmamgarimatham of Kadapa district as Mudukuru constituency in-charge, Naidu said that during the TDP regime the party had taken up several welfare programmes and development activities in Kadapa district for the benefit of the poor but all those programmes were either diluted or abandoned by the present government.

He alleged that all development in Kadapa had been limited to only to the Idupulapaya estate of YS Rajasekhara Reddy while lakhs of rural poor in the district were still struggling for two meals a day.

The Congress party on Thursday condemned Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu’s statement wherein he held the ruling party responsible for rampant corruption in the State.

Talking to reporters, Legislative Council whip Y Shivaram Reddy alleged that it was Naidu who has sown the seeds of corruption at all levels during his nine-year tenure as the Chief Minister. He said the Congress party was finding it difficult to eradicate the menace which has made strong roots at all levels. However, he said that the State Government has been making strenuous efforts to root out corruption from the society.

Shivaram Reddy reminded Naidu that several scams including Eluru scam and other irregularities occurred during the TDP rule. Naidu still faces allegations of corruption and has amassed huge wealth through illegal means, he alleged. He advised Naidu to check his own credentials before making comments about the Congress party.

Stating that the Formula-1 project was not linked to development, Shivaram Reddy said that all States in the country would have organised F-1 races if they would have ensured development. He said instead of projects like F-1, the Congress government focussed more on setting up of industries and creation of direct employment opportunities. He ridiculed Naidu’s criticism holding former chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy responsible for losing F-1 project.

Meanwhile, Congress MLC Rudrajau Padmaraju alleged that the TDP president is demanding the cancellation of Polavaram tenders as his party MP Nama Nageshwara Rao failed to get its contracts. Accusing Naidu of trying to obstruct the development of the State, Padmaraju said that it was incorrect on the part of all political parties to try to stall a project on which nearly Rs 3,500 Crore have already been spent.

The Telangana Employees JAC chairman Swamy Goud on Tuesday claimed that the employees have sacrificed their Privileged and Earned Leaves for the sake of the Telangana state.

Talking to reporter at the TNGOs Office here, Swamy Goud refuted the reports that the government has agreed to pay the salaries for the strike period. He clarified that the government has only agreed to adjust the strike days against the PLs and ELs and therefore, all the employees have lost 42 days of pay by participating in the general strike. He further announced that the strike has not been ‘called off’ but only ‘postponed’.

Swamy Goud alleged that the political leaders first instigated them to go on the strike and then they themselves backed out. However, he said all the employees remained firm and continued the strike despite pressure from the government. He ridiculed some leaders who were first requesting the employees to withdraw the strike and now criticising the JAC’s decision.

Comparing the strike with the 1969 Telangana agitation, he said last time the general strike went on for 38 days while this time it last for 42 days. He said it was due to the employees’ strike that the Congress Core Committee met eight times to discuss the Telangana issue and enormous pressure was mounted on the Centre to take an early decision on the statehood issue.

The TE-JAC chairman said that the employees never deviated from the original demand of announcement of formation of Telangana state. However, the other demands which were included during negotiations with the government were related to the post-agitation scenario.

While criticising all political leaders, Swamy Goud also praised some leaders including Ponnam Prabhakar, Madhu Yashki Goud, Jupally Krishna Rao and Komatireddy Venkat Reddy for displaying commitment towards the cause of Telangana. Clarifying that the TE-JAC does not represent any political parties, he said that the employees plan to start a fresh agitation against the ‘betrayer of Telangana’ in near future. (INN)

Former minister Komatreddy Venkat Reddy on Tuesday announced that he would resign from the primary membership of the Congress party if the High Command takes a decision against the formation of Telangana state.

Talking to reporter at the TNGOs Office here, Venkat Reddy said that the Congress High Command was expected to announce its decision on Telangana statehood issue in the first week of November. However, if the decision goes against the interest of Telangana, then he would immediately resign from the party’s primary membership.

The former minister said that he came to the TNGOs office to seek the support of government employees for the indefinite hunger fast that he would undertake from November 1 at Nalgonda along with one lakh supporters. He warned the State Government of dire consequences if it tries to sabotage or foils his hunger fast.

Meanwhile, the TNGOs have announced their support to Venkat Reddy’s proposed fast. However, the former minister was not sure whether other political leaders would support his move. He said when the political leaders ignored the strike by thousand of Telangana employees, there was little possibility that they would support his hunger strike. (INN)

The Telangana Employees Joint Action Committee on Monday called off the general strike that it started 42 days ago demanding statehood for the Telangana region.

After holding several rounds of discussions with Deputy Chief Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha and other senior officials at the State Secretariat for several hours, the TE-JAC has agreed to withdraw the strike. The government in turn, has accepted nine demands made by the employees.

The demands which have been accepted include treating the strike period as paid leave and the release of pay for the strike period as salary advance. The government has also agreed to withdraw the cases booked against the employees during the strike period. However, a legal opinion would be taken before lifting the cases depending upon their gravity and this could happen on case to case basis.

The employees have also asked for cancellation of GO 177 which enforces ‘No Work No Pay’ rule. The JAC said that a delegation of employees should be taken to Delhi for a direct discussion with the Centre on the statehood issue. The employees were also against usage of Essential Services Maintenance Act in future. Other demands included implementation of GO 610 in all the departments and reinstatement of the outsourcing employees who were not involved in any cases during the strike period.

The State Government has agreed to consider accepting all the demands. The government would constitute a committee headed by a retired High Court judge to review the implementation of GO 610.

After arriving at a consensus on nine primary demands at the discussions held at Secretariat, the Telangana Employees JAC leaders went to the CM’s Camp Office to finalise the talks with Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy.

Sources say that the employees would join the duties from Tuesday onwards. However, the JAC was yet to make an official announcement till the filing of this report. (INN)

Hailing the Congress in-charge of state affairs Ghulam Nabi Azad’s call to striking employees to withdraw their agitation considering the upcoming festivals of Deepawali and Bakrid, Handlooms and Textiles Minister Dr P Shankar Rao on Monday stated the Congress party has been making complete efforts to resolve the Telangana tangle.

Talking to media persons at Congress Legislature Party office, Dr Shankar Rao said that Azad’s statement that consultations with state level leaders has been completed and dialogue with national level leaders was yet to be started, was a clear indication that the Centre was taking all steps to evolve consensus on sensitive Telangana statehood issue. He said Azad’s statement reflects the mindset of Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Telangana statehood issue.

Dr Shankar Rao expressed confidence that the Centre would make an clear announcement on Telangana state by the end of this month. He appealed to striking employees to call off strike considering the people’s inconvenience and festival mood.

The Minister also informed that he would submit his property details to Lokayukta before October 29. (INN)
